following the wrath of Hurricane
Katrina, the New Orleans
Klezmer All-Stars, a sextet of incredible
musicians, reunited for the first time at
an outstanding performance — the
Klezmers for Katrina benefit at
Congregation Shaarey Zedek in
Southfield. The concert raised $10,000
to rebuild and repair New Orleans syna-
gogues affected by the storm.
The Kidz Klez Band of Michigan, a
group of young local musicians led by
Cantor Stephen Dubov of
Congregation Chaye Olam in Bloomfield
Township, warmed up the audience of
300 people with familiar Jewish. tunes
like "I have a Little Dreidel."
Both bands joined with saxophonist
David Appleman of White Lake for
"We Are One," a song about Jews joining
together — the theme of the night.
Scott Stern and Rabbi Paul Yedwab of
Temple Israel in West Bloomfield co-
wrote "We Are One." Appleman
arranged it for the Kids Klez Band.

fund-raiser).
The B'nai B'rith Great Lakes Region
Cultural Arts Commission, B'nai B'rith
International Disaster Relief Program,
local synagogues and the Jewish News
co-sponsored the
benefit.
Cantor Dubov, a
West Bloomfield res-
ident, lived in New
Orleans for six years
and helped organize
the All Stars. "New
Orleans is one of the
Cantor Dubov
most beautiful cities
in America," he said.
"We can't let that town and its culture
disappear." -
