t wasn't quite the famed frozen
tundra of Green Bay's Lambeau
Field, but conditions at the Jewish
Community Center in West
Bloomfield were less than ideal for a
championship football game.
The Jolson A and Shapiro A teams
had to deal with snow and cold in
addition to each other as they battled
for the top prize in the M. Jacob and
Sons AZA Flag Football League.
Jolson won by a surprisingly lop-
sided 42-18 score, avenging a one-
point overtime loss to Shapiro in last
year's title game. Jolson had won three
straight championships
before the heart-breaking
2004 defeat.
"It was rough out there
because of the conditions,
but everyone got through
it," said Max Aidenbaum,
16, of West Bloomfield, a
member of the Jolson
team. "A lot of guys wore
plastic cleats from base-
ball, soccer, anything they
had, to get traction."
All signs pointed to a
tight title game. Jolson beat
Shapiro by just eight points
during the regular season
and it had to play the Dec. 4 Jolson's champs: From left, top row, Steve Astrein _ ,

out Jeff Rosenberg, their
Hantler, Max Aidenbaum, Zack Simons, Andy

Steve Astrein filled in for
Rosenberg and was fantastic in a relief
role, running for five touchdowns.
Astrein also was the quarterback in
Jolson's two previous playoff games,
played Nov. 27. He threw a "hail Mary"
touchdown pass to Max Weberman
from midfield on the final play to beat
Greenberg A in the semifinals.
"Everyone had to step up and do
more in the playoffs because Jeff was-
n't there said Aidenbaum, a junior at
West Bloomfield High who plays for-
ward on the school's hockey team.
