Israel tracts have been widely docu-
mented, recently became president of
the Middle East Studies Association
is great cause for concern.
Though in a Michigan Daily article
on Oct. 4, Cole denied being anti-
Israel or a bigot, CampusWatch, affil-
iated with Daniel Pipes' respected
Philadelphia-based Middle East
Forum, opined that Cole "is blindly
anti-Israel to the point of supporting
anti-Semitic conspiracy theories"
and is "an apologist for radical
Islam."

Student Needs First
And where has U-M. Hillel's profes-
sional leadership been: lobbying for
Muslim prayer space; exhorting that
Hillel be opened for Muslim prayer
on a space-available basis; causing
uproar among students (Hillel's chair
and treasurer resigned), parents and
donors. Hillel instead should focus
on the exigent needs of Jewish stu-
dents.
The priority should be staunching
anti-Israel hostilities in classes and
on campus. Hillel should direct its
energies to lifting the ban on Israel
study abroad and to assuring that
graduations and major exams aren't

scheduled on our major religious
holidays. Instead of hosting a play
considered by Jewish students to be.
critical of Israel, how about a film
series to counter the inflammatory
movies on campus that liken Israel
to Nazi Germany.
Robert Sklar speaks for many
when he asks what Jewish leadership
is doing to Meet these grave chal-
lenges. Only substantive communal
re-orientation can avert impending
crisis; damage control, gratuitous
spin and lip service won't do. •
The year-end compels us to take
stock of our communal portfolio,
writing off and learning from our
painful losses and looking ahead to
those investments that will yield us
the greatest dividends. Our children,
our future, are that investment. ❑

gregation's schools. All of these initia-
tives are an important part of the Fed-
eration's support for various types of
Jewish education in our community.

Day School Impact
Still we must recognize that
Federation's support for day school
education has evolved over time.
While day school education has been
one of our highest priorities over the
last seven years and has received.
increased support, the increases have
not kept pace with the growing needs
for financial assistance, special needs
'programming, new technology
demands and the need for improve-
ments in teacher and curriculum
development. The Partnership for
Excellence in Jewish Education noted
that according to a recent study, only
22 percent of day school graduates
intermarry, compared to approximate-
ly 50 percent of all Jews. Their
research has shown that graduates of
Jewish day schools are equipped with
a Jewish literacy that enables them to
make life decisions inspired by Jewish
values, traditions, text and culture.

Day school graduates help provide
for the future leadership of our com-
munity. Therefore, it is essential for
our community to make day school
education a piiority for all of us, to
help ensure our community's Jewish
future. Support for day school educa-
tion remains a major priority in our
community.
Federation can only do as much as
the dollars raised allow us to do. Every
gift counts. As the Federation closes
its 2005 Campaign, and continues its
2006 Campaign, it is vital for every
member of our community to support
and, wherever possible to become an
advocate for, the Federation's Annual
Campaign, so that we can continue to
provide for the vulnerable populations
in our community, for informal edu-
cation, for congregational and adult .
education as well as for day school
education. Together we can do, and I
believe that we do, a world of good. ❑
