n her way to a fund-rais-
ing event for Sen. Debbie
Stabenow, D-Mich, Sen.
Hillary Rodham Clinton, D-N.Y.,
stopped in Dearborn to speak to
Jewish Democratic supporters on
Dec. I.
The values that Israel and the
United States share predate either
of our nations, she told an avid
crowd of 135. "They go back to the
very fundamental beliefs about
human dignity and individual
empowerment and respect.
Governments may come and go,
but the relationship endures!'
Clinton last visited Israel with
her husband to mark the 10th
anniversary of Yitzhak Rabin's
assassination.
She also met with Israel's foreign
and defense ministers and Prime
Minister Ariel Sharon before he
formed his new political part.
She said that Palestinian leader-
ship is "expected to take on the ter-
rorists and to do so in a vigorous
and aggressive manor."
"It is now up to the Palestinians
to show that they can govern it and
produce results for their people,
that they can control their borders
and prevent terrorism and smug-
gling weapons',' she said. "The EU
[European Union) will be much
more willing to put pressure
on[Palestinian Authority
President]ivIahmoud Abbas and the
Palestinians than they did before
the Gaza disengagement. The
Europeans are being much tougher
than they ever have been before on
Hamas."
She also had harsh words for
Hamas leaders referring to them-
selves as a political party.
"You cannot have political par-
ties claiming to be part of a demo-
cratic process who are, in effect,
