ns\\ er: Dear Susan, Di-
etary fiber (a.k.a. rough-
age/bulk) is a complex,
J
non-starch carbohydrate ("carb"),
which includes those parts of plant
foods that your body can't absorb.
Since it can't be absorbed, fiber
is not really a nutrient, nor does it
add calories to your diet.

Insoluble fiber helps increase the
movement of material through
your system, increases bulk, and
can alleviate constipation and ir-
regularity. Soluble fiber dissolves
into a gel-like substance, which
can delay glucose absorption and
help lower blood cholesterol.

Fiber is usually classified into two
. groups: insoluble (doesn't
-4 dissolve in water) and
Ji
\\ solUble (dissolves in water).
Both types are important
N . in your diet.. Green and
leafy vegetables, le-
(
games, wheat bran, nuts,
) brown rice, and whole
grain products are ex-
amples of insoluble fiber.
_ Apples, oranges, pears,
peaches, grapes, prunes,
peas, beans, carrots, oats,
barley; rye and psyllium are
examples of soluble fiber.
My advice: at the very least, make
sure that most of the carbs you're
intaking are high in fiber.
