Lichtman was a social worker
by day — and a recreational
writer at night and on weekends.
Today, she is retired from her position
in the rehabilitation unit at Botsford
General Hospital in Farmington Hills
and is the author of Survival from
Malice (iUniverse Inc., Lincoln, Neb.),
a book that pays tribute to her mother,
the survivor of the wanton reckless-
ness of a drunk driver.

What spurred you to write
about your mother's
ordeal?

"She always wanted people to know
about what she went through because
of a drunk driver, what it did to our
family and how she always lived with
pain."

What happened to her?

"In 1935, my mother, who was 21 at
the time, was walking to visit a friend.
She crossed over Clairmount in
Detroit, when a drunk driver hit her.
The tail of her suit was caught on the
car, and she was dragged 75 feet
across the streetcar tracks. Her leg was
crushed and repaired with screws and
bolts. She was in the hospital for.a
year. With no insurance, medical bills
from her injuries totally wiped out my
parents' savings."

How did the book evolve?
"I started the book four years ago in a
creative writing class at West
Bloomfield Parks and Recreation. It
started as a memoir, but turned into a
book that is fiction, but based on my
