Some time during her under-
graduate study at the
University of Pennsylvania's
Wharton School of Business,
Linda Stein Gold decided a
corporate career wasn't what
she wanted. She turned her
attention to medicine, enrolling
in the university's medical
school, where she became
interested in dermatology, with
its opportunities to work with a
broad spectrum of patients. She
felt drawn to a field that is also
a surgical specialty.
As the director of clinical
research for dermatology, Dr.
Stein Gold oversees multiple
clinical trials at Henry Ford.
MAJOR CLEARANCE
"Henry Ford Hospital is a
center of nationwide research,"
she says. "People come from all
over Michigan to participate in
state-of-the-art dermatologic
treatments. Our patients have
access to the newest medica-
tions and treatments for skin
conditions, before they are
widely available. Through
clinical trials we are able to
offer sophisticated treatments
to those who might not other-
wise be able to afford them."

She says her patients' success
stories bring a great deal of
satisfaction.
"I had a patient with chronic
psoriasis. The condition was so
bad that it affected his lifestyle,

"Another patient, a teen-ager,
had such a severe case of acne
that he wouldn't look me in the
eye at his first appointment. His
successful treatment resulted in
a transformation of his person-
ality. He was just glowing."
Dr. Stein Gold explains that
skin cancer is the most preva-
lent type of cancer, affecting one
in five Americans. Melanoma is
the most serious type, since it
can be life threatening. She
diagnoses melanomas in young,
otherwise healthy, individuals
several times each year, and
stresses. the need for avoiding
the number-one risk factor for
skin cancer: overexposure to
sunlight. Sunscreen with at
least a 15 SPF should be applied
every two hours to all exposed
skin, including ears and lips,
even on cloudy days. A broad-
brimmed hat and UV-blocking
sunglasses are also important.
"No tan is a healthy tan," she
says. "Protect your children,
because the most important sun
exposure happens before age 20.
Severe sunburns in this age range
put individuals at increased risk
of skin cancer later in life.
Self-monitoring is critical."
Dr. Stein Gold lives with her
husband and three children in
West Bloomfield. The family is
affiliated with Congregation
Shaary Zedek, where the Golds'
twin sons are looking forward
to their upcoming B'Nai
Mitzvah.
