When Oren Yehi-Shalom, 34, of Tel
Aviv is ordained, he mainly sees it as
another degree. "It is a symbol for
something I've learned. I don't know
what I will do with it." But that does-

ture," he says.
Last Rosh Hashanah he was on a

beach in the Sinai desert and was
pleased to find many of his contem-
poraries were eager to have a mean:
ingful Rosh Hashanah. "It often
seems like they only have two
options: to have an empty secular
identity or the ultra-Orthodox fun-
damentalist option,"Yehi-Shalom
explained. He was touched, but not
surprised, that they freely came
together to -review their lives and
relationships and express their
hopes for the coming year.
"We want to help Jews express
being Jewish and celebrate being
Jewish," says Yehi-Shalom of his
efforts. "We need to spread the
infrastructure to help people be
more aware of what they do and why
they do it, and to help them find
