fully. Please explain the relation-
ship between stress and my blood
glucose levels. Thanks, Sylvia.

nsw.,rer: Dear Sylvia, blood
glucose levels in diabetics
_..may be affected by stress
in-at least two ways:'

First, people under stress tend not
to take as good care of themselves.
That can result in unconscious
eating and snacking of car-
bohydrate-rich foods, more
alcohol intake, less exercise,
or even forgetting (or lack-
.ing the time) to plan good
meals or even test blood
glucose levels properly.

Second, stress hormones
may alter blood glucose
levels directly. Scientists
have studied the effects
/ of stress on glucose
levels in animals and
people. Diabetic mice under
stress have elevated glucose levels.
The effects on people with -type 1
diabetes are mixed -- most people's
glucose levels go up with mental
stress, others' glucose levels. can
.o down. In type 2 diabetics, men-
tal stress often raises blood glucose
levels. Physical stress, such as ill-
ness or injury, causes higher blood
glucose levels in people with either
type of diabetes.

Stress may not be avoidable, but a •
good coach can help get you back
on a positive behavioral track.
