Harry Kirsbaum Staff Writer M ichigan State University announced the reinstatement of study abroad programs in Tsrael on Nov.9. The school canceled its programs five years ago because of safety concerns due to the intifada. Kenneth Waltzer, director of the MSU • Jewish Studies program, said he has been working on the reinstatement since October 2004. "We petitioned for two things": he said. "First, to reinstate financial aid and scholar- ship funds for any stu- dents who directly enrolled and went on their own :.. Then we petitioned to reinstate the faculty-led pro- gram that we created in the late 1990s." The financial aid and scholarship funds Schare were approved last year and nine students enrolled at Hebrew University in Jerusalem and at Tel Aviv University. Jamie Schare, the Jewish Student Union representative of the Associated Students' Waltzer of Michigan State University, introduced a similar bill dur- ing an ASMSU meeting, which passed on Oct. 25. "I was noticing that other schools were starting to study abroad after it was put on hold:' said Schare, a sophomore from Farmington Hills. "I looked into it and . wrote the bill." About 20 to 25 MSU students studied in Israel each year from 1998-2000. Waltzer said that he is aiming to take 20 students to'Hebrew University this summer when he leads the Jewish Studies Program at the Rothberg International School. Schare said she will attend. Ohio State, Wisconsin and Indiana are the other Big Ten universities that allow similar programs in Israel. The ban is still in place at Northwestern, Penn State and the University of Michigan, according to the Michigan Daily. 1-1 Council Workshop Articulating Israel's case to elect- ed officials will be the topic of a Monday, Dec. 12, breakfast work- shop featuring Eric Adelman, director of government relations for the Jewish Community Council of .Metropolitan Detroit. The event will be held at 7:45 a.m. at the Max M. Adelman Fisher Federation Building in Bloomfield Township. During the hour-long program, Adelman will discuss how to contact elected officials and effectively communicate Israel's position, present cogent argu- ments and serve as a useful resource on Israel related issues. The workshop is part of Advocates for Israel-A Metro Detroit Media Response Team, a new yearlong effort co-sponsored by JCCouncil, American Jewish Committee and Anti-Defamation League.
