MSU reinstates study abroad
programs in Israel.

Harry Kirsbaum

Staff Writer

M

ichigan State University
announced the reinstatement of
study abroad programs in Tsrael

on Nov.9.
The school canceled its programs five
years ago because of safety concerns due to
the intifada.
Kenneth Waltzer, director of the MSU •
Jewish Studies program, said he has been
working on the reinstatement since October
2004.
"We petitioned for two things": he said.
"First, to reinstate financial aid and scholar-
ship funds for any stu-
dents who directly
enrolled and went on
their own :.. Then we
petitioned to reinstate
the faculty-led pro-
gram that we created
in the late 1990s."
The financial aid
and scholarship funds
Schare
were approved last
year and nine students
enrolled at Hebrew
University in
Jerusalem and at Tel
Aviv University.
Jamie Schare, the
Jewish Student Union
representative of the
Associated Students'
Waltzer
of Michigan State
University, introduced a similar bill dur-
ing an ASMSU meeting, which passed on
Oct. 25.
"I was noticing that other schools were
starting to study abroad after it was put on
hold:' said Schare, a sophomore from
Farmington Hills. "I looked into it and .
wrote the bill."
About 20 to 25 MSU students studied in
Israel each year from 1998-2000.
Waltzer said that he is aiming to take 20
students to'Hebrew University this summer
when he leads the Jewish Studies Program
at the Rothberg International School. Schare
said she will attend.
Ohio State, Wisconsin and Indiana are
the other Big Ten universities that allow
similar programs in Israel. The ban is still
in place at Northwestern, Penn State and the
University of Michigan, according to the
Michigan Daily. 1-1
