Arlo & The Ark

The Ark in Ann Arbor concluded its 40th
anniversary celebration Saturday, Dec. 3,
with a special fall fund-raiser featuring Arlo
Guthrie, who coincidentally is celebrating
the 40th anniversary of his legendary
"Alice's Restaurant." The event was sold out.
Folksinger Guthrie and his siblings,
brother Joadie and sister Nora, were raised
Jewish by their mother, Marjorie Maza,
wife for 22 years of the legendary Woody
Guthrie. She was a dancer with the Martha

Small Screen Notes

The 0.C., the Fox TV show, airs its third
annual "Chrismukkah" episode on
Thursday, Dec. 15. (This is the name that
the "half-Jewish" lead character, Seth
Cohen, played by Adam Brody, gives to
the two holidays.)
Advance reports say that Seth's non-
Jewish best friend Ryan gets "Bar-Mitz-
vahkkahed" (whatever that is) during
this episode. We also see home movies of
Seth's "real" bar mitzvah.
While many people disagree with this
commingling of traditions, Reuters
reports on one "mingling" that I have to
see as just fine : Berlin, Germany, is
holding it's first "Chrismukka Market"
this month. The huge growth of the
Jewish population in Berlin due to
Russian Jewish immigration has
spurred the creation of a joint holiday
market selling Chanukah and Christmas
gifts. Berlin's mayor said, "Jewish life
and culture is once again blossoming in
our city. Berlin is proud of this and will
do everything to encourage this positive

Graham Dance Company, and he was a ris-
ing young singer and writer of protest
songs when they met.
The couple lived in Coney Island, across
the street from Marjorie's parents Isadore
and Aliza Greenblatt, a well-known Yiddish
poet. Woody Guthrie learned a lot about
Judaism from his in-laws and wrote many
songs, on everything from Chanukah to
the Holocaust.
In 1960, Arlo had a bar mitzvah, tutored
by Meir Kahane, then a gentle young rabbi
with no hint of a future as the leader of the
militant Jewish Defense League.
Arlo Guthrie has described his child-
hood in Howard Beach, a middle-class sec-
tion of Queens, as "a typical Jewish
upbringing for the time." The family spent
many Shabbat evenings at the home of the
Greenblatts and he attended the local
Jewish community center. Arlo's explo-
ration of religion and spiritual themes as
an adult led him to found the Guthrie
Center and Foundation, an interfaith wor-
ship and educational organization in Great
Barrington, Mass.
Last year, Arlo and his sister Nora
released the CD Happy Joyous Hanuka,
which set Woody's words to music by the
Klezmatics. This year, Nora co-authored
the book Woody Guthrie Artworks (Rizzoli;
$45), a compilation of drawings, cartoons,
illustrations and watercolors by the man
known more for his singing than his aes-
thetic sensibility. ❑

development."
Meanwhile, HBO has decided to pickup
for showing next year a sit-corn about
marriage titled Lucky Louie. It co-stars
Louis C.K. and Pamela Segall Adlon, 37.
Louis C.K. is the stage name of popu-
lar comedian Louis Szekely, who created
Lucky Louie and helps write it. Szekely's,
paternal grandfather was Hungarian'
Jewish (his other grandparents were
Mexican and Irish Catholic).
Adlon, a real cutie in a tiny frame, is
best known as a top voice actress (King
of the Hill). Her father-in-law is German
film director Percy
Adlon (Bagdad
Cafe), who is
Jewish on his
mother's side.
Percy's father's
family founded the
Hotel Adlon, the
most famous hotel
in Berlin. II

Testimonial: "Royal Catering presented us with an assortment of mouth-
watering menu selections to choose from. Close attention was paid to every
detail involved with home catering and our specific needs (for a kosher
family and friends' pre-wedding party).
Jeff and the Royal Catering staff were professional and stress free to work
with. We were so pleased with the success of our party - we hired him to do
one two weeks later."
