Margarine is usually a
vegetable liquid fat made
more solid into margarine.
It usually has the same
calories as butter as it is
a replacement. It can
,< be purchased whipped,
> with reduced fat, less
>)
\i' calories, and made into
a spread.
The controversy is
that margarine contains
Trans Fats. Trans Fats
have an unusual geometric form
and metabolize differently in the
body. The hydrogenation process
of taking a liquid and developing a
more solid product, while mak-
ing a longer shelf/refrigerated life,
may be a health risk. Due to high
rates of inflammation, obesity and
other related disorders, experts are
questioning the usage.
Use the new Trans Fats labeling
in 2006 as your guideline. If you
enjoy butter, do so in moderation.
Better yet, go for organic.
