Baseball Cards

Jerusalem/JTA — Israel's top court
was asked to recognize
Conservative and Reform conver-
sions performed in the Jewish
state. The Reform movement's
Israel Religious Action Center filed
seven High Court petitions
Tuesday demanding that the
Orthodox monopoly on local con-
versions be ended.
Earlier this year, the Reform and
Conservative movements scored a
judicial coup when the High Court
ordered the state to recognize their
converts who had studied in Israel
but completed the conversion pro-
cedure abroad. The Orthodox
establishment opposes granting
full recognition to Reform and
Conservative conversions in Israel,
saying this would undermine
Israel's core identity.

New York/JTA — A new Jewish
baseball card set is being
released.
The 2006 edition features 55
cards, including "newly discov-
ered" Jewish players and Jewish
players from the 1940s women's
league.
There also are cards for each of
the 13 Jews who played in the
major leagues in 2005, believed
to be the most Jewish players in
history.
The set costs $36 and is avail-
able at ajhs.org -or by calling
(866) 740-8013.

Washington/JTA — The U.S.
Supreme Court let stand a $116
million judgment against the PLO
and Palestinian Authority. The
high court Monday chose not to
block the judgment in favor of the
family of an American citizen_and
his Israeli wife who were killed in
1996 in the West Bank.
A federal court in Rhode Island
had found the ruling Palestinian
organizations responsible for the
attack because they gave safe
haven to Hamas.

German Orthodoxy

Berlin/JTA — U.S. Orthodox
Jewish officials proposed
exchange programs to help build
traditional Judaism in Germany.
The proposal came during meet-
ings last week in Berlin between
Orthodox Union officials and
German Jewish leaders.
In the works are teen exchange
programs, volunteer training
programs and apprenticeships
that would bring young volun-
teers from Germany together
with American counterparts,
said Rabbi Steven Burg, national
director of the National
Conference of Synagogue Youth.
Programs are projected to start
in the summer of 2007.

Israel was following a policy of restraint until the suicide bombing
in Hadera on Oct. 26, when six Israelis were killed and dozens
wounded. Israel must act against terror because the Palestinian
Authority fails to do so, even though the P.A. knows that is its obli-
gation under the tahadiya or lull agreed to by them and other
Palestinian organizations as negotiated in Cairo.
