What was your primary duty in New
Orleans?

"Helping the Salvation Army with
packing and distributing food."

What do you remember most about
your two weeks in New Orleans?

"The apparent absence of Jewish
volunteers on the street. Jewish
organizations did send money
and provided upper management
directions. But no 'on the street'
presence. We missed an opportu-
nity to work with people. We
needed a 'people to people' con-
tact. At the same time, I saw
numerous Christian volunteers
from small town churches in
middle America working in New
Orleans."

What were the Jewish values that
prompted you to volunteer for the
Salvation Army rescue squad?

The Chicago Symphony Orchestra returns for the
first time since 1997 with the dazzling jazz pianist
Marcus Roberts for an evening of music that includes
two audience favorites — a unique arrangement
of George Gershwin's Rhapsody in Blue and the
Symphonic Dances from Leonard Bernstein's popular
musical West Side Story.

"Tzedakah."
