"I was lonely at home; there would be
days I wouldn't get dressed until late in
the afternoon. Then one day I realized
that I needed a change. That's why I
moved to The Park at Trowbridge...

Playing the festivals is most
fun for Davis, who likes connect-
ing with singers and musicians
he has admired. These include
Steve Earle and Lyle Lovett.
Traveling has become a chal-
lenge for the former Oak Parker,
who plans on getting married
next summer. His infant daugh-
ter sometimes has been on the
road with the group.
Late spring and summer have
become the busy performance
time for Ste ppin' In It. The rest of
the year esseptially is spent
rehearsing and recording, and
there's another CD in the works.
Davis' lyrics can be earthy and
lonely, whether they have to do
with city or country. His country
numbers often are based on the
considerable time he has spent in
Marquette, where his dad,
Michael Davis, makes his home.
"I write songs by jotting down
ideas when they come to me and
organizing them later:' Davis
says. "The music usually comes
after the lyrics. I bring my ideas
to rehearsal, and the group helps
work out each one. The songs can
become more collaborative in
this way."
