When I first saw the caricature on
the cover of the JN on Nov. 10, I
wasn't offended. In fact, I hardly
noticed. Was it because I harbored
prejudice against Orthodox Jews? I
hope not, but I wonder how many
Reform and Conservative Jews
think the Orthodox are not like
them at all.
If I ever felt that way before, I
certainly don't now, after attend-
ing Partners in Torah for the last
few months. Partners in Torah, led
locally by Rabbi Avraham Cohen
of Yeshiva Beth Yehudah in
Southfield, provides men and
women who have an interest in
Jewish study with their own per-
sonal Torah trainer.
I have listened and learned
from Orthodox Jews who just
want to share what they know
with any Jew who wants to learn.
My wife and I have felt nothing
but sincere, non-judgmental, gen-
erous education about the Torah,
Mishnah and other Jewish stud-
ies.
If only we could get Jews with
different backgrounds in the same
room every week, listening, talk-
ing, exchanging ideas, we might
not be subjected to stereotyped
caricatures again.

Enlightened Struggle

It was an honor to represent B'nai
B'rith at the "National Victory
Celebration for Rosa Louise
Parks" held at the Greater Grace
Temple in Detroit on Nov. 2
("Saying Goodbye,' Nov. 10, page
10. Notwithstanding the inappro-
priate politicking of many of the
speakers — particularly the
smoothly delivered anti-Semitic
vitriol of the Rev. Louis
Farrakhan, a man who represents
almost the antithesis of Parks —
the-power of the humble, dedicat-
ed and focused woman inspired
us.
Speaker after speaker, chal-
lenged us to have a "Rosa Parks
Moment;' or make a "Rosa
Resolution" to stand up for what is
right even when, or especially
when, we face opposition and
ridicule. While there were many

very touching, beautiful and
meaningful tributes to Mrs. Parks,
the excesses of some of the speak-
ers made it clear that some things
are just too important to leave to
leaders.
Whether quietly or loudly, in
front of thousands or when no
one is looking, each of us must
personally step up and engage in
the struggle to make the
American ideals of liberty and
justice for all a reality.
B'nai B'rith's Enlighten America
programs locally and nationwide,
are just one expression of our
commitment. What is yours?

Stirring Speech

Thanks to the Adat Shalom
Synagogue Men's Club for arrang-
ing the program at the Holocaust
Memorial Center in Farmington
Hills this past Sunday where
many of us heard Berl Falbaum
tell a story of hardship and sur-
vival in wartime Shanghai.
Mr. Falbaum gave a vivid per-
sonal account of the 20,000 most-
ly Germans who foresaw the
calamity and left Europe while
they still could before the gates
closed on Jews leaving Germany.
Mr. Falbaum's account of the ter-
rible conditions in Shanghai was
still better for the Jews than the
Chinese that the Japanese treated
very cruelly and the tenacity and
spirit of the refugees under harsh
conditions is a tribute to them.
I am looking forward to reading
his book Shanghai Remembered.

Correction

In "Fulfilling Dreams" (Nov. 17,
page 25), a story about a fund-
raiser for Camp Mak-A-Dream, an
incorrect amount was given
regarding sponsorship of a
camper. To send a child to this
camp in Montana for young can-
cer patients costs $3,000.
