Game On!

MSU, U-M Hillels reschedule
rivalry after football confusion.

A

lthough the first attempt
to play the Graham Cup
football game between
the Hillels of the University of
Michigan and Michigan State
University was unsuccessful, the
game will be played in December
"rain, shine, snow, sleet, whatev-
er:' said Allen Weiss, chair of
intramural sports at U-M Hillel.
The Graham Cup series
includes football, basketball and
softball games. The cup goes to
the Hillel that wins two out of the
three games.
The two Hillels were prepared
to play the football game on
Sunday, Oct. 21, at Ralph Young
Field at MSU. Early that morn-
ing, a member of the U-M team
cancelled the game due to
"weather [thunderstorms] ... and
exams!'
But the MSU team was not
notified until right before game
time, when the MSU Hillel play-
ers were already at the field.
There appears to be some bad
blood over the incident, intensi-
fying the Green and White vs.
Maize and Blue rivalry.
Jared Rapp, MSU Hillel's pro-
gramming associate and head of
intramural sports, said his team
was assembled and ready to play
Oct. 21. He added that a brunch
had been prepared for both
teams, and a lot of time went into
practicing and promoting the
game.

New Members Sought

The Impact-Michigan Unit of
B'nai B'rith is seeking new mem-
bers for the 20-somethings unit.
The unit has single and married
men and women members.
For information on Impact-
Michigan, call Adam or Jennifer
at (248) 646-0136.

MSU players believe U-M did
not have enough players to field a
team, but U-M denies that alle-
gation. Spokesmen said it was
not a team decision to cancel,
and the team wanted to resched-
ule the game, rather than forfeit.
The game has been resched-
uled to Sunday, Dec. 4. The loca-
tion has yet to be determined. U-
M's Weiss has assured MSU Hillel
that his team will be there. .
Despite varying accounts from
U-M team members of why the
game was . cancelled, both teams
want to continue a positive rela-
tionship. "We want our kids to
play the game said MSU's Rapp.
Added Jonathon Koenigsberg,
associate director of MSU Hillel,
"My general position is that
though it's unfortunate that the
U-M Hillel couldn't make the
football game several weeks ago,
I wholly support any opportunity
to bring the two Hillel teams
together.
"The Graham Cup is a great
way to engage Jewish students
from two premier state schools .
in some friendly athletic compe-
tition:'
Bill and Susie Graham of West
Bloomfield funded the series last
year in memory of their daugh-
ter, Alexandra. U-M won all three
games to win the inaugural
cup.
