\ 31SWer (Part 2 of 2): Dear Tom,
the more refined/added sugars in
your diet, the more difficult it is to
consume enough nutrients without
gaining weight. In theory, substi-
tute sweeteners allow people to
consume a wider range of foods
while maintaining a reduced calo-
rie/carb lifestyle. A nice theory,
but, as is often the case, things
E aren't quite that simple.

These are what I call "the
Big Three" artificial
'jJ sweeteners: (1) Saccharin
(brand: Sweet 'n Low/pkg.
color: pink). (2) Aspar-
tame (brand: NutraSweet
and Equal/pkg. color:
- blue), and (3) Sucralose
(brand: Splenda/pkg.

colon-yellow). All three
, have been approved by the
FDA, but are not without
their controversies, e.g.:
• Saccharin causes cancer in test
animals, and used to bear a haz-
ardous warning label;
• Aspartame has been accused of
all manner of ills, but is approved
by the American Heart Associa-
tion; and
• Sucralose, the least criticized (for
now), also has its detractors.

Sarah Silverman's says her edgy comedy
is meant to ridicule bigotry and insensitivity.

My advice: if possible, avoid sub-
stitute sweeteners; otherwise, use
in moderation and, when in doubt,
consult your healthcare provider.
