It's the biggest, brightest, merriest Come volunteer and spread some cheer. Dozens of locations throughout Metro Detroit welcome your helping hands and caring heart. Sunday, December 25 She encouraged teaching chil- dren to report bullying to an adult with a simple "in-out rule!' Tattling: If it will get another child in trouble, don't tell. Telling: If it will get you or another child out of trouble, don't tell. If it is both — an adult needs to know. Her advice was to teach chil- dren the difference between teas-, ing and taunting. Teasing is what we do with our friends in a light- hearted way, and we can swap roles. Taunting is one-sided, intended to harm; and laughter is directed at the target, not with the target. If your child is bullied, she said not to minimize the bully's behavior or tell your child to fight back. Do tell them they are not alone and it's not their fault, then report it. Coloroso's advice resonated with her audience. "She didn't make a distinction between the way kids dehuman- ize others on an individual basis and the way groups of people dehumanize through genocide," said Bonnie Medwed of West Bloomfield, an Opening the Doors educator. "She was phenomenal," said Susie Citrin of Birmingham. "This has broader significance. If we can react to the bullies with the positive tools that she gave ... the world would be a better place." Dr. Jeffrey Betman of Farmington Hills, a psychologist, said: "She's a champion for the victim without blaming the vic- tim!' Ei Join us Sunday morning at the Max M.
