ticks and stones may
break my bones, but
words will never hurt me
— that adage is a lie, according
to Barbara Coloroso, internation-
al speaker and author of The
Bully, the Bullied and the
Bystander.
In fact, verbal abuse is the
most common form of bullying
by both boys and girls. "It is a
life-and-death issue that we
ignore at our children's peril —
thinking it's a normal part of
childhood."
She cites the shooting spree at
Columbine High School in
Colorado as an example of its
serious consequences.
Coloroso spoke to more than
300 people (parents, teachers and
professionals) during seminars
Nov. 6-7 at the Family Circle pro-
gram and the Day School
Conference. Both annual events
were sponsored by the Jewish
Federation of Metropolitan
Detroit's Alliance for Jewish

Education's Opening the Doors
program, which serves more
than 700 children with special
needs in Jewish preschools, day
schools and supplementary
schools each year.
An educational consultant in
the areas of parenting, teaching
and school discipline, Coloroso
also wrote Kids are Worth It! and
Parenting through Crisis as well
as creating three videos.
"Bullying is a conscious, willful
and deliberate hostile activity
intended to harm that often
occurs under the radar of adults;'
Coloroso said. "It is not about
anger or conflict but contempt
for someone considered worth-
less, inferior, undeserving of
respect. It's arrogance in action?'
Coloroso characterized the
deadly triad: bullies who terror-
ize, the bullied who are afraid to
tell and the bystanders who par-
ticipate or stand idly by. The
most important one is the
bystander because "there are no
innocent bystanders:' she told the
audience.
