Giving Tzedakah

The Shlah writes that fol-
lowing a fast day, a person
should give to the poor
food that would have been
eaten — or the monetary
equivalent — or it may
appear the reason for the
fast was to save on food
expenses.

Taste Of Yiddish

Yiddish singer Susan Leviton of
Harrisburg, Pa., presented a concert,
"Yiddish Song — A Musical Map of
Our Journey," during a Taste of Yiddish
Oct. 29-30. The event was sponsored
by the Workmen's Circle-Arbeter Ring
and the Jewish Community Center of
Metropolitan Detroit. In addition to
the concert and a hands-on workshop
by Leviton (on right, explaining
Jewish-themed paper cuts to a group
including Alva Dworkin of Southfield),
the program continued Oct. 30 with a
"speed Yiddish-learning session" with
New York Yiddish culture educator
Nikolai Borodulin. He also presented a
slide presentation on children's
Yiddish literature.

Presented by Lubavitch Women's
Organization. For information on keep-
ing kosher or lighting Shabbat candles.
