The play focuses not on the
murder of Matthew Shepard itself
but on the town's reactions to the
crime. "In this way," says the direc-
tor,"the play could be about any
kind of hate crime — religious,
racial — it's not limited to homo-
sexuality"
Tickets are $16-$22/$9 students.

Piano Man
Jewish keyboard player David
Bryan (born David Bryan
Rashbaum) has been playing
with the rock icons of Bon Jovi
since 1984, when the band
formed in New Jersey.
Born in Edison, N.J., in 1962,
he began taking piano lessons at
age 7 and continued classical
study for 13 years. Bryan
enrolled at
Rutgers
University,
where he
continued
his musical
education
(and pre-
med stud-
ies), prepar-
ing him for
an audition David Bryan
at the presti-
gious Julliard School of Music.
After gaining acceptance to
Juilliard, the phone rang. Jon Bon
Jovi was on the other end telling
him about the band's new record
deal.
In a home accident, Bryan suf-
fered a potentially career ending
injury to his finger, and found
himself unable to play the piano.
After intensive physical rehabili-
tation for the finger, he was
introduced to the genre of musi-
cal theatre, a field he embraced.
He has written scores and lyrics
for musical theater pieces and
also has released solo albums —
the latest in 2000, a mostly
instrumental collection titled
Lunar Eclipse.
"Piano playing is a dying art:'
he has said. "I love the fact that I
can be one guy with one
instrument evoking an emo-
tional and musical experi-
ence."
Bryan joins bandmates Jon
Bon Jovi, Tico Torres and
Richie Sambora as Bon Jovi
rocks the Palace in the band's
"Have a Nice Day" World Tour
7:30 p.m. Friday, Nov. 18.
Tickets are $49.50-$97.50.

Flora Blooms
Opening tomorrow in Detroit
(see related story on page 64) is
The Bee Season, the film based
on the Myla Goldberg novel.
Despite some middling reviews
for the film, almost every critic
has singled out Bee co-star Flora
Cross for lavish praise. Cross, 12,
plays a young Jewish girl who
feels alienated from her scholarly
parents until a spelling-bee
championship win changes the
family's dynamics.
Cross, who now lives in
Argentina, told film critic Roger
Ebert: "I was born in Paris. I've
lived all round. My first language
is French. Second is English. I
speak Spanish also. My father
was a journalist and still is.
"He has worked in Panama
[and] Israel; he was doing his job
in Jerusalem, and it was sup-
posed to be dangerous to be in
the Old City
with the
Arabs. I'm a
Jew, but
nobody said
anything
about my
Jewish star,
which I wore
around my
neck:"
Cross also
Flora Cross
told Ebert
that her
brothers are former child actor
Harley Cross, 27, and young
actor Eli Marienthal, 19
(American Pie).
