Torn, You may (depending
on your age) remember
that song that goes, "Sugar in the
morning, sugar in the evening,
sugar at suppertime ... ." Well, it's
a cute song, but not very good nu-
tritional advice. Let me explain.

There are two general
, types of sugars in our diet:
(1) Naturally occurring
(e.g., lactose in milk and
;-(/
fructose in fruit), and (2)
Added (e.g., table sugar

Excessive intake of refined (added)
sugars and other calorically dense,
but nutrient-lacking carbohydrates,
has been blamed for a host of
health problems ranging from
mood disorders to weight gain to
diabetes. Does this mean we're
doomed to a lile without sweet-
tasting foods? No, but it does
mean that we're entering the very
confusing world of substitute
sweeteners, which I'll discuss in
some depth next time.
