In the musical Urinetown —
which, like its predecessor Rent,
appeals to a new generation —
residents are faced with the reali-
ty that due to a drought, private
toilets are outlawed. Now, public-
pay toilets are their only option
and are controlled by an
unscrupulous company.
Yet, despite its outlandish prem-
ise and gross-out humor, Urine-
town — U-M Musical Theatre
grad Matthew Rego of the Araca
Group originally brought the piece
to the Great White Way — is an
old-fashioned musical at heart, a
classic tale of star-crossed lovers
and good versus evil.
Parodying more traditional
musicals, Urinetown — with
numbers like "Privilege to Pee"
and "I See A River" — draws on

Dutch Treat
Now filming in
the Netherlands
is Black Book, a
story of Dutch
resistance to the
Nazis. The main
character is a
Spielberg
Jewish woman
who is a cabaret star. Budgeted at
$20 million, it is the most expensive
Dutch movie ever made.
The director is Paul Verhoeven,
who also made the Dutch film
Soldier of Orange (1977), a great film
that pulled no punches as it depict-
ed those Dutch who resisted the
Nazis — and the many who collab-
orated. It so impressed Steven
Spielberg that he invited Verhoeven
to Hollywood where the Dutch
director went on to helm some big
hits (Robocop and Basic Instinct).
