The son of German immigrants
— his father was a salesman and
his mother a bookkeeper —
Bruckheimer, 60, graduated from
Detroit's Mumford High School
in the early 1960s, hence the
Mumford sweatshirt worn by
comedian Eddie Murphy in
Beverly Hills Cop in 1984. He did-
n't do much with his psychology
degree from the University of
Arizona — "other than it gave
me a lot of confidence and some
people skills," he recalled.
Instead, he got a job with a
Detroit advertising agency and
became well known by turning
out a commercial for automaker
Pontiac satirizing the most
talked-about movie of the era,
1967's Bonnie and Clyde. That led
to a New York job with advertis-
ing giant BBD&O, mainly making
Coca-Cola ads.
To the consternation of his
mother, who really wanted him
to be a doctor or lawyer anyway,
Bruckheimer left the $100,000-a-
year position and moved to
Hollywood in the early 1970s to
help a former ad producer make
a movie. "My family and friends
worried, but you have to take a
shot when you're young:' he rea-
soned,"and I always believed in
myself and my ability."
Bruckheimer has produced 70
movies and TV shows, mainly
with Paramount and Disney and
many with his late partner Don
Simpson. They attracted atten-
tion with Richard Gere in
American Gigolo in 1979, but
their first really big hit was the
sleeper Flashdance in 1983, the
story of a Pittsburgh woman
welder with dreams of becoming
a ballet star. Beverly Hills Cop and
Beverly Hills Cop II made a movie
star out of Murphy, and Top Gun
did the same for Tom Cruise in

1985. Nicolas Cage enhanced his
stardom with The Rock in 1996,
the same year that Will Smith got
a big break in Bad Boys.
Other top Bruckheimer films
are Con Air, Armageddon, Enemy
of the State, Days of Thunder,
Crimson Tide, Remember the
Titans, Black Hawk Down, Pearl
Harbor, Veronica Guerin, Pirates
of the Caribbean: The Curse of the
Black Pearl, King Arthur and
National Treasure. Glory Road
will premier in January. Some of
the epic pictures have bombed,
such as Pearl Harbor, which was
credited with having great action
scenes, but was bogged down by
a love story.
Besides the CSI series, TV
shows have included Soldier of
Fortune, Swing Vote, The Amazing
Race, Without a Trace, Profiles
