Scales from
vah, she made the decision to
become a rabbi and was ordained
by the Reform movement's
Hebrew Union College-Jewish
Institute of Religion in Jerusalem
in 1999 at age 44. She holds a
master of Hebrew Letters degree
from HUC-JIR.
Since her ordination she has
been the rabbi of Kibbutz Gezer,
which is a 70-member congrega-
tion in central Israel and affiliated
with the Israel Movement for
Progressive Judaism. The IMPJ
serves both the kibbutz and sur-
rounding areas.
The staunch support of her
congregation helped Rabbi Gold
to be named on the petition. She
wants to be able to continue to
serve them as a rabbi recognized
by the State of Israel. "These are
people who are paying taxes, but
who are not getting the religious
services that are suitable for
them',' Rabbi Gold said.
Ha'aretz quotes Meir Spiegler,
the director of religious services
for Israeli Prime Minister Ariel
Sharon, as saying, `The chief rab-
binate is opposed across-the-
board to the appointment of
Reform rabbis:'
But Rabbi Gold responded by
saying,"This is something to be
done through the government, not
through the rabbinate. This is not
a revolution to put ,onservative
and Reform rabbis everywhere. It
is to recognize that if a communi-
ty decides that is what is suitable
for them, they can have it. And
there is every reason for this to
succeed if we believe in a demo-
cratic state:'
