Hermelin Award. If the carpet were real, it might even be the thick Saxony Plush variety that bedecks his Farmington Hills office where Nusbaum, 72, a Franklin resi- dent, presides in retirement as a private investor. It follows a 38- year career as an owner of New York Carpet World, with 200 stores in 17 states. By starring in his own television commercials, Nusbaum became a household name and face in many Detroit area homes. A Michigan governor once told him: "You have one of the most recognizable faces in the state; you could get elected to T any office." Nusbaum doubts that. "I was busy running the stores, sometimes spending two hours to shoot a 30-second commercial and trying to stay involved in major Jewish charitable organi- zations:' he said. That involvement has earned him the American ORT award, which honors the memory of his good friend, David B. Hermelin, Metro Detroit businessman-phi- lanthropist, who had been presi- dent of Detroit, American and World ORT and later served as U.S. ambassador to Norway. Hermelin died in 2000. "David introduced me to ORT," Nusbaum recalled. "He was intensely devoted to the ORT cause. The years we spent work- ing together for ORT were the most rewarding and exciting of my communal life." Nusbaum and 59 other people each donated $100,000 to the ORT Hermelin College of Engineering in Israel. Nusbaum is past president of the Detroit chapter and recipient of the ORT November 10 . 2005
