H undreds of supporters kept Metro Detroit on the map as one of the world's premier cancer care providers by attending the sixth annual Sinai Guild-Women in Philanthropy benefit on behalf of breast can- cer research. It's right in your own back yard:' said the attorney, who was diagnosed with bone cancer at age 12 and today is an advocate for the rights of people with disabilities. Over the past four years, the Sinai Guild has given $1 million in grants that provide medical supplies and equipment to hos- pitals all over the Detroit area. The Guild estimates it grossed about $150,000 at the October event. Funds raised this year will go toward buying breast cancer detection and treatment equip- ment for Huron Valley Sinai Hospital in Commerce Township and the Barbara Ann Karmanos Cancer Institute in Detroit. "Several members of my fami- ly had breast cancer and didn't have the medical research and technology they have today:' said Rose Rita Goldman of Bloomfield Hills. She co-chaired the fund-raiser with Barbara Nemer of Franklin. "I care a great deal about the work of Karmanos and the Sinai Guild:' said supporter Doreen Hermelin of Bingham Farms. Leading manufacturers of breast imaging and biopsy equipment — Hologic, head- quartered in Massachusetts, Suros, in Indianapolis and GRANDXRAY in Grand Rapids — sponsored the event.
