t was only a matter of time before Saab came out
with an SUV.
After all, that's what happens when the
Swedish car company becomes a subsidiary of
General Motors. The Saab 9-7X is morphed from pres-
ent-day GM SUVs like the Chevrolet TrailBlazer. Add
some luxury accoutrements like leather seats, a cool-
looking instrument panel and the ignition location on
the center console behind the gearshift, and you'll know
you're in a Saab.
The 9-7X Linear, base price of $38,990 plus destina-
tion charge, has a 4.2-liter, DOHC, 24-valve, six-cylinder
engine with 275 horses and 275 lb-ft of torque.
For $2,000 more, its sister, the 9-7X Arc, comes
equipped with a 5.3 liter, 16-valve, V-8 engine with 300
horsepower and 330 lb-ft of torque.
Both versions have all-wheel drive and driver and
passenger front airbags. The 2006 versions feature side-
curtain airbags as well.
They both get 15 mpg in the city; the Linear gets 21
mpg on the highway, and the Arc gets 19 mpg.
