Oak Park
Mayor Seeks
New Term

ak Park Mayor Gerald E.
Naftaly is running for
re-election Nov. 8.
Naftaly, 53, has been an Oak
Park resident for 51 years. He
has been mayor for the past 14
years and a member of the City
Council since 1977. His 28 con-
secutive years of service on
council also is an Oak Park
record.
Naftaly, a vice-president of
investments for Robert W. Baird
& Co. in West Bloomfield, has
been a stockbroker for 26 years.
He holds a degree in business
and accounting from Wayne
State University in Detroit.
Mayor Naftaly began his
career in poli-
tics after help-
ing to organize
a shuttle-bus
route between
Oak Park,
Wayne State
and downtown
Detroit during
Naftaly
the energy cri-
sis in the early
1970s. He lists
his achievements as lobbying for
the Michigan State Police Metro
North Post, leading a municipal
administrative reorganization
for increased efficiency, lobbying
for $3 million in federal trans-
portation grants to repair 11
Mile Road.
Under his leadership, the
long-vacant former Michigan
Armory property on Eight Mile
Road is undergoing a multi-mil-
lion dollar development and
there are several condominium
and retail developments moving
forward on Eight Mile Road,
Coolidge, and at 10 Mile and
Greenfield (the former Mel Farr
auto dealership).
The annexations of Royal Oak
Township properties north of 10
Mile Road has added to the city's
revenue base and increased its
population.
Additional public safety offi-
cers have been hired to protect
the new area, and more officers
are patrolling city streets. ❑
