harlie Kraft has played
sports for most of his life,
but helping the athletes
in Special Olympics shoot a bas-
ket or skate across the finish line
has taught him the true meaning
of being a winner.
Kraft volunteered at a Special
Olympics skating competition
last winter and felt an immediate
connection with the kids and the
organization. He since has par-
ticipated in several other events,
including basketball, track and
field, and bowling. On Sunday
afternoons, Kraft can be found at
the Birmingham Ice Arena, help-
ing the kids hone their skating
skills.
Kraft grew up in the Detroit
area but feels most at home in
the north woods atmosphere of
Camp Tamakwa, which he and
his family owned and operated
for many years. Tamakwa, which
is located in Algonquin Park,
Ontario, was immortalized in the
movie Indian Summer by film-
maker Mike Binder, a former
Detroiter and Tamakwa alum-
nus.

It was during his summers
there that Kraft developed his
athletic skills and his talent for
working with kids, making
Special Olympics a natural
venue.
Kraft, who manages the
Romulus service facility of truck
manufacturer Reefer Peterbilt,
has two daughters who still enjoy
spending their summers at
Camp Tamakwa: Emily, who is a
student at Western Michigan
University, and Jenna, who
attends Michigan State
University.

How did you become involved with
Special Olympics?

"A friend who volunteers for
them asked me to help out at an
ice skating competition last
January, so I agreed to try it. I've
skated all my life; I play hockey
every Sunday morning with a
group that has been together for
20 years.
"I had never worked with kids
with special needs before, and I
really enjoyed it, so I started vol-
unteering on a regular basis. So
