BOOK YOUR HOLIDAY PARTY NOW!

f you want to hear David
Deutsch, humor editor of the
edgy New York magazine
Heeb: The New Jew Review, talk
about his new book, you'll have
to go to Ann Arbor.
Deutsch, co-author of The Big
Book of Jewish Conspiracies, will
speak 7:30 p.m. Sunday, Nov.
1+3, at the Jewish Community
Center of Washtenaw County's
18th Annual Book Festival.
The nonfiction book, written
with Heeb editor Josh Neuman, is
a purportedly humorous com-
pendium of "The Greatest Hits of
Jewish Hating!' Good taste? Bad
taste?
Go to Ann Arbor and find out.
The Ann Arbor event includes
numerous speakers who also will
be appearing at the Jewish
Community Center of
Metropolitan Detroit's 54th
Annual Jewish Book Fair. They
include architect Daniel
Libeskind, speaking in Ann
Arbor noon Tuesday, Nov. 8; nov-
elist Meg Wolitzer (noon
Wednesday, Nov. 9); and journal-
ists Peter Schroeder and Dagmar
Schroeder-Hildebrand, who
wrote The Six Million Paper Clips
(8 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 10).
However, nine of the national
authors scheduled to appear at
the JCC of Washtenaw County
will not be coming to metro
Detroit as well — at least not on
this trip.
"We were very pleased that
some of the national authors who
have a limited amount of time
were able to fit us into their
schedule," said Esther Ullman,
who co-chairs the festival with
Lisa Molnar and Washtenaw
County JCC Executive Director
Leslie Bash.
"We're not that large a book
fair, but, with some of the

authors, when we said we were in
Ann Arbor, they said, 'Ann Arbor?
I love Ann Arbor! When do you
want me?"'
The Ann Arbor event, which
runs from Sunday, Nov. 6,
through Sunday, Nov. 13, is
known as a festival rather than a
fair, Ullman emphasized.
"We consider it a festival of the
arts, not just a place to purchase
books:' she said.
For example, when Joseph
Horowitz, author of Classical
Music in America: A History of Its
Rise and Fall, speaks about his
book (7:30 p.m. Saturday, Nov.
12), the Ann Arbor Symphony
String Quartet will perform.
Before hearing Gigi Anders,
author of Jubana!: The
Awkwardly True and Dazzling
Adventures of a Jewish Cubana
Goddess (7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Nov.
8), two local book clubs are hold-
ing a Cuban dinner. (Horowitz
will speak in Ann Arbor only;
Anders also appears in Metro
Detroit on Nov. 9.)
From Monday, Nov. 7, through
Friday, Nov. 11, the Book Festival
presents its noontime speakers in
a lunch-and-learn format. For $7,
paid in advance, patrons can
enjoy a light lunch provided by
the JCC or bring their own,
Ullman said.
A complimentary brunch will
be served on Sunday, Nov. 13,
beginning at 10:30 a.m., when
local authors will speak about
their books.
"We'll have at least 10 authors
— a combination of people from
the University of Michigan and
other local people Ullman said.
"Every year, we get some local
people we didn't even know had
written books. Each one gives a
10 minute presentation!"
A returning guest to the Book
Festival is Art Shamsky, co-
author of The Magnificent
