the Berkley team.
This is the first time Marshall
Shencopp, 60, has coached a high
school squad. But he has exten-
sive hockey coaching experience,
from house to AAA, from mites to
midget majors. "I'm looking for-
ward to the challenge of building
not just a team, but a program
with community involvement," he
said.
Ex-Berkley hockey star Devin
Shencopp, 21, will be an assistant
coach with his father. Devin is a
junior at Oakland University.
Marshall and Debbie Shencopp
have two other children. Alexa
Shencopp, 19, is a sophomore at
Michigan State University. Aaron
Shencopp, 13, is an eighth-grader
at Norup Middle School in Oak
Park.

On The Beam

Former Berkley High gymnas-
tics star Emily Sills is the new
gymnastics coach at her alma
mater. Sills, 26, a 1997 Berkley
grad, tied for ninth place in the
Division II uneven bars competi-
tion at the 1997 high school state
meet. She competed at states
three times while she was with
the Bears and she was a team co-
captain as a junior and senior.
A Ferndale resident, Sills was
Berkley's assistant coach last sea-
son. She also was a coach with the
Red Cedar Gymnastics Club in
Okemos for three years while she
was a student at Michigan State
University.
Sills earned a bachelor's degree
in environmental science from
MSU in 2001 and a teaching cer-
tificate from Eastern Michigan
University in 2004. She's a fifth
grade teacher at Lanigan
Elementary in Farmington Hills.
Jennifer Greenberg, another
1997 Berkley grad and Sills' for-
mer gymnastics teammate, is the
Bears' assistant coach. ❑
