Orchard Lake, 248-538-4600) and
Trader Joe's (31221 Fourteen Mile,
248-737-4609). And no talk of gro-
cery shopping here is complete
without taking note of the flagship
Hiller's (6433 Orchard Lake, 248-
851-7100) supermarket, and the
emphasis being on "super."
Indeed, while all of the big
chain stores, from DSW Shoe
Warehouse (7290 Orchard Lake,
248-626-1253) to Loehmann's
(31005 Orchard Lake, 248-855-
2393) and a Marshall's megastore
(31145 Orchard Lake, 248-851-
7222), plus Eastern Mountain
Sports (30837 Orchard Lake, 248-
932-5953), discounter Annie Sez
(6303 Orchard Lake, 248-855-
0473) and Gap (31365 Orchard
Lake, 248-737-8748), have a signif-
icant presence along the street, it's
the independently owned shops
that give Orchard Lake its singular
personality.
Tapper's Jewelers (6337
Orchard Lake, 248 932 7715),
Bricker Tunis Furs (6335 Orchard
Lake, 248 855 9200) and
Sherwood Studios (6644 Orchard
Lake, 248-855-1600) do an
admirable job of acting as the
street's "anchors" in lieu of a large
department store.
Expectant mothers and mothers
with kids in tow head to West
Bloomfield Plaza for such shops as
Buddha Belly (6718 Orchard Lake,
248-855-2688) maternity wear;
Baby and Me (6718 Orchard Lake,
248-855-3214); Brody's (6690
Orchard Lake, 248-851-6232) boy's
wear, featuring special sizes, from
slim to husky; and Cinderella's
Castle (6702 Orchard Lake, 248-
851-0663), specializing in clothing
and accessories for young and pre-
teen girls. And nearby is an outlet
from infant wear manufacturer
Carter's (30965 Orchard Lake, 248-
538-7920) and Koochie Koo (6893
Orchard Lake, 248-855-8818).
One-off merchants worth check-
ing out include Lil' Havana (6690
Orchard Lake, 248-539-0190) for
cigar aficionados, Esther's Judaica
(6245 Orchard Lake, 248-932-
3377), Choice Aquariums (27861
Orchard Lake, 248-553-0414),

While mostly the domain of retail
and office development, Orchard
Lake Road just north of 12 Mile is
home to the imposing and
poignant Holocaust Memorial
Center (248-553-2400 or
www.holocaustcenter.org ), the first
museum of its kind in the United
States dedicated to the memory of
the Holocaust.
In addition to exhibits chroni-
cling 4,000 years of Jewish history
and the story of European Jewry
during World War II, the HMC
campus includes the Museum of
European Jewish Heritage examin-
ing Jewish life in Europe prior to
the Holocaust, and the

gerous time while risking their
