Testimonial : "Royal Catering presented us with an
assortment of mouth-watering menu selections to choose
from. Close attention was paid to every detail involved with
home catering and our specific needs (for a kosher family
and friends' pre-wedding party).
Jeff and the Royal Catering staff were professional and
stress free to work with. We were so pleased with the success
of our party - we hired him to do one two weeks later."

playground, Noir Leather (124 W.
Fourth, 248-541-3979).
Also in the mix is the fun and
funky home and fashion accessory
and beauty products store Shine
(621 S. Washington, 248-414-5277)
and Poppy Beauty Bar (412 S.
Washington, 248-545-7466), stock-
ing hard-to-find cosmetics and skin-
care lines.
With all the residential develop-
ment in town, furnishing a new
downtown pad means nothing
more than walking out the front
door to the contemporary Bright
Ideas (220 S. Main, 248-541-9940),
vintage (mid-century) Vertu (514 S.
Washington, 248-545-6050), and the
sleek Larsen at Home (501 S.
Washington, 248-399-3660).
For interesting accents, from
Asian to vintage, Lotus Imports
(419 S. Washington, 248-546-8820)
and Paris Antiques (112 E. Fourth,
248-542-9594) are definitely worth a
look.
Lastly, all this shopping is sure to
work up an appetite. Thankfully,
Holiday Market (1203 S. Main, 248-
541-1414) takes grocery shopping to
a new level. If you've never been, it's
every bit as good as you've heard.

ROYAL
Longtime gallery Ariana (119 S.
Main, 248-546-8810) remains a flag-
ship, of sorts, for the fledgling artis-
tic scene, and will perhaps inspire
others, like the recently opened Neal
Davis Gallery (314 W. Fourth, 248-
298-0326).
Theater enthusiasts — either live
or screen — make Royal Oak an
important stop thanks to the award-
wining, half-century old
Stagecrafters (415 S. Lafayette, 248-
541-6430), which performs at the
restored Baldwin Theatre, and the
Main Art Theater (118 N. Main,
248-542-0180), home to exclusive
showings of independent and artis-
tic films.
It's an institution to be sure, and
Mark Ridley's Comedy Castle (269
E. Fourth, 248-542-9900) continues
to dole out the laughs.
Finally, one of southeast
Michigan's jewels, the Detroit
Zoological Park (corner of 1-696
and Woodward Ave., 248-398-0900)
captivates visitors.
ENTERTAINMENT/HANGOUT
The bars and clubs in downtown
Royal Oak are an interesting mix of
formats. Woody's Diner (208 W.
Fifth, 248-543-6911) and O'Toole's
(205 W. Fifth, 248-591-9226) are
ground zero for the early-20s set,
while their slightly older brethren
make Fifth Avenue Billiards (215
W. Fifth, 248-542-9922) their first
choice.
The scene is a little more subdued
and a bit more dressed up at cigar
bar Goodnight Gracie's (224 S.
Sherman, 248-584-7400), while it's
an "anything goes" attitude at
Pronto Video Bar (608 S.
Washington, 248-544-7900). And
upstairs from Sangria, the line forms
early at its Skyclub (401 S. Lafayette,
248-543-1964) disco.
While they make a fine cup of
Joe, check out the independently
mined Café de Marquis (204 W.
Fifth, 248-398-4169) and Java
Mountain Coffee Bar (734 S.
Washington, 248-398-3440).
At the Royal Oak Music Theatre
(318 W. Fourth, 248-399-2980), live
concerts, comedy performances and
dance parties draw crowds.
Finally, some of the best free
entertainment around can be found
at the corners of Main Street and
either Fourth or Fifth streets, where
the passing parade is unlike any
other.
EVENTS
The Royal Oak Farmer's Market
(316 E. 11 Mile, 248-548-5588, open
weekends all year, with additional
days May through December) is tops
for an abundant selection of fresh
produce, flowers, baked goods and
crafts. On Saturdays, the shed is an
impressive flea market.
