While the big cultural institutions
call Detroit's Midtown district home,
the neighborhood hard against
Campus Martius is a worthwhile
change of pace. Sherry Washington
Gallery (274 Library, 313-961-4500)
showcases the works of contempo-
rary artists with an emphasis on dec-
orative and graphic arts. Nearby,
Biegas Gallery (35 E. Grand River,
313-961-0634) houses a fine art
gallery showing the works of region-
al contemporary artists, as well as a
gift and craft gallery, and A.C.T., an
artists' cooperative. And a few blocks
to the east, this time in the shadow
of the Greektown Casino, Anna
Muccioli exhibits her original oil
paintings and sculptures, and her
son, Nate, sells custom made jewelry
at their eponymous Studio Gallery
(511 Beaubien, 313-962-4700).
Auto historians off all stripes should
spend an afternoon in the newly
restored, and renamed, Rose and
Robert Skillman Downtown Branch
of the Detroit Public Library (121
Gratiot, 313-628-2729) home to the
National Automotive History
Collection, regarded as the nation's
premier public automotive archive.

We Want Great
Things For You.
ARTS & CULTURE
The English translation of
Michigan's state motto is, "If you
seek a pleasant peninsula, look
about you." In a similar vein, if it's
stage performances or sporting
events you seek, there's something
for every taste no matter where you
look downtown.
Plays, musicals, concerts, ballet,
operas and comedy acts draw
crowds to the Music Hall Center
for the Performing Arts (350

New to the downtown scene are
the stores inside the iconic
Compuware building (directly across
from Campus Martius), including
Rio Boutique (99 Monroe, 313-963-

much welcomed, albeit small,

Theater (2211 Woodward, 313-596-
3200), Detroit Opera House (1526
Broadway, 313-961-3500), and Gem
Theatre (333 Madison, 313-963-
9800).
Puppets, not actors or actresses,
rule the stage at PuppetART (25 E.
Grand River, 313-961-7777), which
is celebrating its 10th anniversary
this year. Puppetry-related shows are
held every Saturday afternoon at 2
from September through May.
The NFL's Detroit Lions earn a liv-
ing at Ford Field (2000 Brush St.,
313-262-2000), while the Detroit
Tigers take to the diamond next
door at Comerica Park (2100
Woodward, 313-471-2000).
More than just greenery and
place to sit back and contemplate
the world, Campus Martius
(www.campusmartiuspark.org ) hosts
year-round programming, including
free concerts, movies and ice skat-
ing, plus robust gardens, restored
historic monuments, sculptural
lighting and glorious fountains.
And for a little Las Vegas style, all
gambling roads lead to the MGM
Grand Detroit (1300 John C. Lodge
F ., 313-393-7777), Motor City
(2901 Grand River, 877-777-0711)
and Greektown (555 E. Lafayette,
888-771-4FUN) casinos, complete
with large gaming floors, fine and
casual restaurants and valet parking.
EVENTS
America's Thanksgiving Parade
(www.theparade.org) makes its
annual trek down Woodward
Avenue on Turkey Day, immediately
following the 10k Turkey Trot run-
ning race. The evening prior in
Campus Martius, Detroit Aglow
officially kicks off the holiday sea-
son.
Join in the frenetic, weeklong
series of events leading up to
Superbowl XL on Feb. 5, 2006, at
Ford Field (www.sbxl.org).
The Motown Winter Blast
(www.motownwinterblast.com ) Feb.
2-5 will include entertainment and
family activities.
