Integral to Birmingham's social life
is the pre- and post-movie saunter
through town. Indeed, with two
movie houses - the lovingly
restored, eight-screen Uptown
Birmingham (211 South Old
Woodward, 248-723-6230) and the
12-screen Palladium (250 North
Old Woodward, 248-723-6240) -
showing first run films, evenings
and weekends make for some ter-
rific people-watching.
Weather permitting, one of the
best spots is on the southeast cor-
ner of Woodward and Maple. Grab
a seat on a bench, or find a spot
on the stoop in front of the dis-
play windows at Ann Taylor Loft
(101 South Old Woodward, 248-
644-8110) and sit back and enjoy
the show.

EVENTS

Numerous civic and business
organizations host a variety of
annual events, including special
shopping and fashion programs,
weekly concerts in Shain Park dur-
ing the spring and summer
months, art shows, and a colorful,
some would say upscale, Farmer's
Market, Sundays from July
through October. There's also the
popular citywide Jazzfest the sec-
ond weekend in July.
As well, The Community
House (380 South Bates, 248-644-
5832) plays host to a variety of
annual art and antique shows and
fundraisers, home and garden
tours, wine tastings, and an assort-
ment of classes and workshops.
