Looking for a drink? Check out
Crazy Wisdom Bookstore & Tea
Room (114 S. Main, 734-665-
9468), with their more than 100
teas and iced teas, as well as new
age and religious books and jewel-
ry. For coffee, check out the down-
town locations of Espresso Royale
Caffe (324 S. State, 734-662-2770;
or 214 S. Main, 734-668-1838) or
Starbucks (300 S. Main, 734-222-
9046; or 222 S. State, 734-623-
8067).
If La Dolce Vita is a bit too
much, or you've got your kids in
tow, satisfy your sweet tooth at the
funky Chocolate Cafe (330 S.
Main, 734-222-0552), with its can-
dies, fudge, ice cream and hot and
frozen drinks or with the fine,
handmade, European-style choco-
lates at Schakolad (110 E.
Washington, 734-213-1700). The
fudge is famous at Kilwin's
Chocolate Shoppe & Ice Cream
Parlor (107 E. Liberty, 734-769-
7759) and Ritter's Frozen Custard
(305 S. Main, 734-222-0065; 865
Eisenhower Pkwy., 734-327-1991)
has a variety of custards, smooth-
ies, shakes, cakes and pies.
Mention Ann Arbor and, next to
the university, the annual art fairs
are what come to mind. Almost
1,000 artists and a half a million
visitors turn the city upside down
for four days in July. All the busi-
nesses and restaurants gear up
with specials, free concerts and
activities, and loads of fun. Check
out the Ann Arbor Street Art Fair
(734-994-5260, artfair.org), Art
Fair Village (734-663-5300,
a2southu.com), State Street Area
Art Fair (734-663-6511,
a2state.com ) and the Ann Arbor
Summer Art Fair (734-662-3382,
michiganguild.org).
The Michigan Theater (603 E.
Liberty, 734-668-TIME) is home to
all sorts of events, from films and
lectures to the Ann Arbor
Symphony Orchestra. Two spring-
time events of note are the Ann
Arbor Film Festival (734-995-
5356, aafilmfest.org), one of the
oldest film festivals with the
newest in experimental, avant-
garde, and independent short
films, and the Lenore Marwil
Jewish Film Festival (734-971-
0990, jccannabor.org ), which
screens about a dozen movies in
late April/early May.
The Kerrytown Concert House
(415 N. Fourth Ave., 764-769-
2999) in a beautifully renovated
1850s house holds concerts and
changing art exhibits. The Ark
(316 S. Main, (734) 761-1800) is
the place for diverse acoustic
music presented by a non-profit
group in its intimate, 400-seat club
nearly 300 nights a year. Across
the street is Improv Inferno (309
S. Main St., 734-214-7080), whose
comedy has lots of audience par-
ticipation.
The art fairs,
downtown
entertainment and
campus events
make Ann Arbor
a year-round
destination.
All kinds of music, dance and
theatre are held at U-M's Power
Center for the Performing Arts
(121 Fletcher, 734-763-3333) and
the recently renovated and
acoustically wonderful Hill
Auditorium (825 N. University,
734-764-8350). Both host the Ann
Arbor Summer Festival (734-764-
2538,
annarborsummerfestival.org ), the
biggest entertainment event of the
summer with top national and
international artists performing
theater, dance and music, and free
concerts and movies atop the
Fletcher Street parking structure.
