Jerusalem/JTA — Israel sus-
pended security coordination
efforts with the Palestinian
Authority.
The decision followed the
killing of three West Bank set-
tlers in drive-by shootings, but
Israeli officials said diplomatic
contacts with the Palestinian
Authority would continue.
Israeli forces also imposed new
restrictions on West Bank traffic,
requiring Palestinians to travel
by public transport rather than
private cars. In a further bid to
prevent terrorists from reaching
roads used by Israelis, the army
imposed a closure on Hebron
and Bethlehem.

Abbas Meets Chirac

Paris/JTA — Mahmoud Abbas is
visiting Paris, Le Figaro reported.
He met President Chirac in order
to rally French support for the
Palestinian cause. It is his first
meeting with the French presi-
dent since his election last
January.
Abbas also is expected to dis-
cuss the participation of several
French Companies in the con-
struction of a tramway serving
eastern Jerusalem. Abbas is
expected in Washington to meet
President Bush.

Israelis Beat Raptors

New York/JTA — An Israeli bas-
ketball team defeated an NBA
team. Maccabi Tel Aviv defeated
the Toronto Raptors in Toronto,
105-103. Maccabi had not beaten
an NBA team since 1978. A for-
mer NBA player, Anthony Parker,
hit the game-winning shot for
Maccabi, Israel's top team.

Karzai Ponders Links

Jerusalem/JTA — The president
of Afghanistan said he is willing
to meet with Israeli Prime
Minister Ariel Sharon.
Hamid Karzai told an Israeli
newspaper he believes the time is
right for Afghanistan to formally
acknowledge Israel, following
Israel's withdrawal from the Gaza
Strip and Pakistan's opening of

dialogue with the Jewish state.
"The times have changed,"
Karzai told Yediot Achronot.
"Pakistan took a step toward
Israel. We will, too!" Mark Regev,
a spokesman for Israel's Foreign
Ministry, called the comments a
"positive sign."

General Slammed

Jerusalem/JTA — Worshippers at
Jerusalem's Western Wall
attacked a top Israeli army offi-
cial who helped carry out the
recent Gaza withdrawal.
Maj. Gen. Elazar Stern, head of
the army's manpower branch,
was assaulted when he came in
civilian dress to pray at the wall
with his family. Worshippers sur-
rounded Stern, yelling insults
and trying to prevent him from
reaching the wall. Police officers
surrounded Stern as worshippers
began throwing stones and other
objects at him, Ha'aretz reported.
Stern was not hurt.

Puck Stops Here

New York/JTA — A professional
hockey player sat out a game
because of Yom Kippur.
Jeff Halpern, captain of the
Washington Capitals, sat out the
team's Oct. 12 game against the
Carolina Hurricanes. "I'm not the
most religious person in the
world, but this is something my
family has always observed,"
Halpern told the Washington
Post.

Rights For Observant

Los Angeles/JTA — A Jewish bus
driver was awarded $20,000 from
a Los Angeles transit agency that
had refused him time off for
Shabbat and Jewish holidays.
The award results from a suit
brought by the U.S. Justice
Department last year on behalf
of Henry Asher, 56, against the
L.A. County Metropolitan
Transportation Authority. In a
settlement, the MTA agreed that
drivers who are assigned shifts
that conflict with their religious
observances can take up to 30
days of unpaid leave while wait-
ing for a more suitable shift to
open up.
