ike most teenagers, Jake
Kaplan likes hanging out
with his best friends dur-
ing lunch and after school. The
only difference between Jake and
most teenagers is that his
favorite hangouts are the AI
(Autistic Impaired) classroom at
Seaholm High School in
Birmingham and the Judson
Center in Royal Oak, where he
volunteers with students who
have autism.
Jake, 14, participates in a peer
mentor class at Seaholm and
also helps out in the Judson
Center's Autistic Connections
program.
He also served as a team cap-

Kaplan of Birmingham, for a
recent 5K walk sponsored by
MADD (Mothers Against Drunk
Driving) in memory of their
friends Judy, Alex and Sam

I would handle it. But the first
day was great! I went in with a
positive attitude and left feeling
that I had made a difference to
those kids, even in that short
time!"

How did your involvement increase
as the year went on?
"I got all of my friends interest-
