West Bloomfield-based Jewish
Family Service (JFS), and
IlluminArt Productions have
partnered with North
Farmington High School to
bring Project TRUST'S preven-
tion plays to students in Metro
Detroit. More than 10,000 stu-
dents have benefited.
North Farmington High stu-
dents will make up the acting
company for fall 2005. They
include: Brad Alonza, Jon Black,
Brian Lee, Sarah Green, Kelsey
Harper, Leah Jacobs and Paige
Shaetzley. The program will
return to Bloomfield Hills
Lahser in spring 2006.
Project TRUST — Teaching
and Reaching Using Students
and Theater — is an award-win-
ning peer education program
available in 40 U.S. school dis-
tricts. High school students per-
form educational prevention
plays for elementary, middle and
high schools. Peer education
sites receive scripts, training,
performance direction, evalua-
tion and technical support from
the Minneapolis-based Illusion
Theater's staff.
Children and youth have an
opportunity to identify and
rehearse responses to uncom-
fortable or exploitive situations,
develop social responsibility and
become resources to other stu-
dents.
Students will perform the fol-
lowing plays through November:
• Peace Up! for grades 3-5,
focuses on ways to channel
anger constructively and prevent
violence, harassment and abuse.
• What Goes Around for grades
6-up, addresses social attitudes
about violence, gender and sexu-
al orientation; sexual harass-
ment, racial harassment and
diversity; family violence;
stereotypes; substance abuse;
communication; and respect as a
core value for individuals,
schools and communities.
Each play and discussion is
moderated by IlluminArt
Productions. Materials are pro-
vided for teachers, social work-
ers and psychologists. Jewish
Family Service will provide
resource information for refer-
rals.
