Pride Of Russia

Zubkovsky, 28 and single, began
dancing at the age of 10 under
the influence of his grandmother,
Inna Zubkovskaya, a noted Kirov
dancer and choreographer. His
grandfather was Nikolay
Zubkovskaya, also a dancer and
choreographer. His parents,
Katerina and Vladimir, are for-
mer dancers who continue to
teach.
"Our family is known as the
pride of Russia," said Zubkovsky,
who graduated from the
Vaganova Academy of Russian
Ballet in 1995.
"As a boy, I also loved to paint
and I had thoughts of becoming
a professional artist, but I could
see that, because of my family's
dancing history, I was destined to
be a ballet dancer."
While he was growing up, the
family's Jewish traditions 1vere
suppressed because of the Soviet
government's overall anti-Semitic
leanings, and Zubkovsky never
had a bar mitzvah. "I couldn't go
to Hebrew school to prepare he
said. "But we celebrated the
Jewish holidays in our own way,
and we continue to do so today,"
Zubkovsky added.
"It's difficult when we are trav-
eling, but we do the best we can,
such as when the troupe arrived
in Los Angeles on Oct. 3, at the
start of Rosh Hashanah.
Everything seems to be fine now
in my country. We are no longer
victims of anti-Semitism?'
Zubkovsky is not content with
ballet stardom only. With his

movie star good looks, he
launched a career as a film and
television actor, mainly playing
dramatic roles.
"I just made a movie called
Classy Lady with the star of the
Bolshoi Ballet, and it was a lot of
fun," he said.
But the ballet is still his first
love. "When I go onto the stage
for a ballet performance, it's like
entering a different world, being
possessed by a different spirit:'
he explained. "If you have any
problems, you must put them out
of your mind — forget every-
thing, and just concentrate on
being on stage and performing to
the best of your ability."
The Sleeping Beauty is one of
the three great Tchaikovsky bal-
lets, along with Swan Lake and
The Nutcracker.
"The show has been famous
for its lavish costumes and sets
ever since its debut in 1890, and
this engagement is no exception:'
said DiChiera."Its beloved score
is probably the most popular in
all of ballet." E

be performed by the Kirov
Ballet at the Detroit Opera
House, 1526 Broadway, 7
p.m. Thursday-Friday, Oct.
20-21; 1 and 7 p.m.
Saturday, Oct. 22; and 2
p.m. Sunday, Oct. 23. $28-
