Meet one of the faces of success

Mark Selitsky, M.D., a board-
certified Internal Medicine
physician, is director of the
International Travel Health
Clinic at the Henry Ford Medical
Center-West Bloomfield.

prepare for

ities, no

remote they
may be."

Travel has always been a major
part of Dr. Selitsky's life. In
fact, it's how he met his wife.

Despite occa-

concerns,
however,
Dr. Selitsky believes travel is an
enriching experience.

"My wife, Orit Szwarcman, was
born in Israel and raised in
Belgium," says the Huntington
Woods resident. "I was flying
from Tel Aviv to Brussels in
1981 when we met. Almost
everyone else on the plane was
part of a Christian missionary
group but Orit and I managed
to find each other. Actually,
at first, she thought I was a
security guard."

Dr. Selitsky sees many patients
who are heading to the world's
hot spots. He has worked with
reporters going overseas on
assignment, including some
who cover the war in Iraq. He
also treats those who are plan-
ning pilgrimages or missions.

At the travel clinic, Dr. Selitsky
will inquire about patients'
pre-existing conditions, and
warn them about possible
disease-causing sanitation
concerns in certain countries as
well as insects and wildlife.

"There's a common expression
among doctors that travel
expands the mind and loosens
the bowels," Dr. Selitsky says.

"There are diseases and natural
hazards that are specific to
certain areas,. But the traveler
must also be prepared for other
situations that may arise. Last
year's tsunami is a good example
of a travel hazard, as is possible
civil unrest in some areas. The
physician specializing in travel
medicine needs to help patients

"Travel ties you into world

of the world who didn't return
with an enhanced perspective."

"Two years ago, we had a
family reunion in Israel," said
Dr. Selitsky. "There were five
generations represented, from
Holocaust survivors to third
and fourth generation Israelis
on active duty in the army. It
was an uplifting and inspiring
gathering, including some
relatives who have lived there
since well before statehood in
1948."
