Golden Age Composers Richard Rodgers and Lorenz Hart adapted Shakespeare's The Comedy of Errors into the 1938 musical comedy The Boys From Syracuse. It was the first musical written based on a Shakespeare play — and was chosen for personal rea- sons. In the original Broadway pro- duction, Larry Hart's younger brother, a comedian named Teddy Hart, teamed up with a look-alike comedian named Jimmy Savo to play the twin Dromios. "I knew nepotism should be frowned on," Rodgers said at the time, "but I also knew this was an Rodgers and inspired Hart idea." Written during the Golden Age of song writing, the score includes classic songs like "Falling in Love With Love" and "The Shortest Day of the Year." "The score adds a depth to the show that standard comedy doesn't have," said Brent Wagner, associate professor and chair of the University of Michigan Musical Theatre Department. "Mistaken identity is one of the oldest forms of comedy. And George Abbot (who wrote the show's book) was known for his fast-paced comedy style." Wagner directs the depart- ment's production of The Boys From Syracuse 7:30 p.m. Thurs- day, 8 p.m. Friday and Saturday and 2 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 13-16, at the Lydia Mendelssohn Theatre in Ann Arbor. At first, I thought actor Nicholas Cage (who isn't Jewish) had gone out on a limb when I read he had named his newborn son "Kai-El Coppola Cage." But the more I thought about it, the more I realized Cage is right in the mainstream. "Kai-El" is just part of the wave that has made biblical- Hebrew names like Sarah, Joshua, Jacob, and Hannah among the most popular American baby names. "Kai-Er as comic book fans know, is Superman's birth name from the planet Krypton — before he was given the WASPy "Clark Kent." Back in the 1930s, two Jewish teenagers, JOE SCHUSTER and JERRY SIEGEL, created Super- man and gave him a birth name that includes "El," one of the Hebrew words that refers to God. l askin...July, '04 RIVATE DINING ROOM FULL BAR PULL SERVICE CATERING r NB Am ama um Nos -. 111 I Receive % Off Total Food Bill Dine-in only.
