Orthodox retirees' group launched.
Sarah Faygie Berkowitz
Special to the Jewish News
s
ome 80 people came to
the kickoff event for the
new Council of Orthodox
Jewish Active Retirees (COJAR)
Sept. 20 at the Jewish Commun-
ity Center in Oak Park.
COJAR was the brainchild of
Esther Posner of Southfield, a
financial planner who retired
about three years ago and was
looking for a way to structure
activities around the Jewish cal-
endar so she could socialize, exer-
cise and learn along with others.
"A Taste of COJAR" featured a
full day of activities, including a
tour of the JCC, separate fitness
classes for men and women,
lunch and two speakers.
Rabbi Shmuel Irons gave an
inspirational lecture titled,
"Living Each Day at a Time" in
which he broke down the letters
in the word "TODAY" into Trust,
Opportunity, Destiny,
Appreciation and Yesterday.
The featured speaker of the
day was Jonah Ottensoser, who
moved from designing aircraft
for the government into consult-
ing for the Star-K of Baltimore
and with appliance companies
such as Maytag. He delved into
the technology of each appliance
and its implications for kosher
and Sabbath-observant users.
October 13 - 2005
Ottensoser detailed various
aspects of kitchen technology,
joking about the newest gadgets
on the market, such as refrigera-
tors that speak to their users, the
latest models of double dish-
washers and high-end cook tops
with automatic simmer modes.
At lunch, COJAR chair Posner
and Fayga Dombey, Young Israel
Council of Metropolitan Detroit
president, discussed the creation
of COJAR and thanked the Jewish
Fund for financial support as
well as partners Young Israel
Council, the JCC and Yeshiva
Beth Yehudah's Partners in Torah.
COJAR's program officially
begins Nov. 1. The program flows
with the Jewish calendar, with no
classes taking place between the
High Holidays and Sukkot, nor
from Purim through Pesach.
Plans for November include
classes on using digital cameras,
a discussion about Yiddish short
stories in English, a tour of old
Jewish Detroit and a visit to the
Habatat Galleries' art glass exhib-
it led by Deanna Sperka.
COJAR membership is $100 a
year, plus membership to the JCC
at the cultural level minimally,
which is $72. For more informa-
tion, call COJAR Program
Coordinator Sarah Faygie
