nswer: Dear Lauren, "ge-
netically modified" foods
result from the manipula-
tion of genetic material in food
production. The goal, ideally, is
to produce "superior" food items,
e.g., threat-resistant soybeans
(eliminating/reducing the need to
grow using harmful chemicals),
nutrient-enhanced rice, etc.
These food items are known
as "genetically modified,"
"genetically engineered,"
or "transgenic" (hereafter
referred to as "GM").

Opinion

Something Extra

.

Not surprisingly,
controversy surrounds
GM foods. Opponents
of GM foods include
environmental activ-
ists, organic food
proponents, scientists, and
even religious groups who
argue that the GM process may be
harmful to the environment, other
organisms, and nature's processes.

The FDA has ruled that separate
labeling for GM foods is not neces-
sary, because what is important are
the scientifically objective charac-
teristics of food, not the particular
process used to create them. If you
are concerned about GM foods,
I recommend you look for foods
labeled "USDA 100% Organic"
or "100% Organic," which should
ensure, among other things, that
the food item is not GM.
