the leading edge. Among the
other countries are Israel,
Canada, China and the United
Kingdom. The United States is
notably absent from the list.
Although the Christian reli-
gious right opposes embryonic
stem cell research, such is not
the case among Jewish rabbinic
leaders, according to Rabbi
Yechiel Morris of Congregation
Young Israel of Southfield.
Judaism believes in extending
life, he said, quoting Leviticus
19:16: "You shall not stand
aside while your fellow's blood
is being shed."

Within Jewish Law

"It is within Jewish religious
law, the mandate to remove, for

clinical research to help cure
disease, stem cells from pre-
existing embryos donated to
IVF [in vitro fertilization] clin-
ics which no longer serve the
clinical need of the individuals
seeking IVF treatment, and
which would otherwise be dis-
carded," Rabbi Morris said.
Audience members continued
to discuss the issues with the
three speakers well after the
meeting ended. "I have been
advocating for embryonic stem
cell research in Michigan for a
year," said Sue Luria of
Bloomfield Township, president
of the Greater Detroit Chapter
of Hadassah, "and I learned
some new things here
tonight."

SAJE Goes Digital

S

omething new has been added at Seminars for Adult
Jewish Enrichment. Thanks to a donation from Marcy
Borofsky of West Bloomfield, SAJE has purchased digital satel-
lite service that will allow Metro Detroiters to view and partici-
pate in live programs from New York City's 92nd Street Y.
The first program in the series, a live talk by author Elie
Wiesel, will be broadcast at 7 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 1, at the
Jewish Community Center in West Bloomfield. In his lecture,
Wiesel will explore the evolution of the Jewish people through-
out history.

The program costs $5 for JCC members; $8 for non-mem-
bers.
