Diana Lieberman

Special to the Jewish News

On Sept. 25, Lone Pine
Elementary School families met
at a corner gazebo between
Middlebelt and Orchard Lake
roads for a Hurricane-Walk-
athon. From there, they trekked
1.25 miles through their own
neighborhoods to raise funds for
families from Gulf Coast neigh-
borhoods whose lives were dis-
rupted by Hurricane Katrina.

Lisa Lopatin of Bloomfield
Township. She brought children
Trevor, 11, Alyssa, 7, and Hunter,
5, along with her husband, Fred.
The family belongs to Temple
Israel.

Walk-athon. It was organized by
the district, the PTO Council and
each school's PTO.
"What happened was that
every school in the district held a
walk at a different time of the
day, from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Ours
was at 2 p.m. Fortunately, the
rain held off till we were done!"

What lesson did you want to
impart?

"Our goal is for kids to do
things for other kids. All week
long, the children had seen these
terrible scenes of destruction
and misery on television, and it's
very important for them to know
they are not powerless when
something like this happens.
"Our goal is to help them
develop empathy.
"Last year, when I was presi-
dent of the PTO, we did a project
