Yad Ezra Today

In recent years, perishable items have been added to the reg-
ularly distributed foods. "Fresh vegetables, meat and chicken
were only a dream in the early '90s,"
Eizelman said.
In 1999, Yad Ezra also began to provide
health and hygiene items — toothpaste,
shampoo, deodorant, toilet paper and soap
— which cannot be purchased with food
stamps.
That year, a lunch assistance program
began. It has provided an average of 80 day
school students per year with in-school
Mickey
lunches.
Eizelman
Today, Yad Ezra assists 1,100 families —
more than 2,500 individuals — every month. Some 850,000
pounds of food will be distributed this year the agency's budget
is $800,000. A staff of five, an executive committee, board of
trustees and a core of 125 regular volunteers make it happen.
Yad Ezra's current home in Berkley was made possible three
years ago through community donations. Of the $1.25 million
budgeted for the purchase and renovation, the Meer family con-
tributed $500,000. A grant from the Kresge Foundation provid-
ed $185,000, with the rest donated by individuals and founda-
tions, allowing the agency to own the building without a mort-
gage.
Yad Ezra uses 10,000 square feet of the 16,000 square-foot
building and rents out the rest.
"It is a wonderful thing to be able to go from the bare mini-
mum of our beginnings in the basement of an office building to
where we are now," Eizelman said. ❑
